Skin Resurfacing techniques, such as dermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing, are designed to soften facial irregularities and scars, and correct blotchy skin and uneven pigmentation.
Dermabrasion involves the mechanical abrading of top layers of skin using a high-sped rotary wheel. Laser resurfacing uses a carbon dioxide laser beam to remove skin layers by vaporization.
These procedures usually last from a few minutes to an hour per session, and are performed under local or general anesthesia.
Side effects include temporary swelling, stinging, throbbing, or a burning sensation. Lightening of treated skin and sensitivity to the sun may occur.
Most patients are back to work in two weeks. Results are permanent, although new wrinkles may form as skin ages. Treatment may require more than one session.
